Balance!

Balance is the answer to so many things on so many levels. This morning I have physical balance on my mind. I woke up over two hours earlier than usual and may have dozed a bit but never returned to true sleep. Meditation and pranayama (guiding the breath) filled the time. I suspect the time change is affecting me. My body consistently shows me the folly of human beings thinking they can manipulate and control nature.

There is a simple meditation with breath and finger acupressure that ventilates the chakras. I love that word ventilate. Let’s open up and air out our energy system! Read through the instructions and then begin. Throughout this practice hold the intention of balance.

Sit comfortably with your hands in prayer position at the heart. Breathe softly and slowly until you feel your shoulders relax and your mind begin to focus. Bring the awareness to the hands and separate them about a half-inch, keeping the palms facing each other and the fingers slightly apart.

Bring the pads (not the tips) of your little fingers lightly together for 3 slow breaths and notice where in the body your awareness settles. Release the fingers.

Bring the pads of your ring fingers lightly together for 3 slow breaths and notice where in the body your awareness settles. Release the fingers.

Bring the pads of your middle fingers lightly together for 3 slow breaths and notice where in the body your awareness settles. Release the fingers.

Bring the pads of your index fingers lightly together for 3 slow breaths and notice where in the body your awareness settles. Release the fingers.

Bring the pads of your thumbs fingers lightly together for 3 slow breaths and notice where in the body your awareness settles. Release the fingers.

Bring the pads of all your fingers and thumbs lightly together for 3 slow breaths and notice where in the body your awareness settles. Release the fingers.

Bring your hands back to prayer position and end this meditation with the affirmation “I am balanced and whole on every level of awareness.”

Each of the finger combinations ventilates specific chakras:

Little fingers – chakras 1 and 2

Ring fingers – chakra 3

Middle fingers – chakra 4

Index fingers – chakra 5

Thumbs – chakras 6 and 7

This meditation is simple enough to teach to children. When I instruct children or those who do not practice yoga, I use neutral terms. For example, “Let’s do something that will help you feel calmer or more balanced.” Questions like “Did you know breathing helps your body and brain wake up?” Or “Your fingers can help your brain do a better job.”

I’ll be doing this meditation several times today. Hope you find it helpful as well!

Aum shanti. Namaste.

  1. Thank you for this simple balancing meditation. Funny how the time change makes one feel so crummy. I had nightmares both nights, and did not wake up feeling well, especially this morning. I, too, will do this practice during the day. Perhaps by evening I will feel peaceful. I think children will love doing this. Lucky Hannah! Grammy knows!
