Definitions

Words like “Om” have become a part of our language. We use them so often that it is easy to lose touch with the true meaning and essence. Periodically I revisit the definitions to enhance and enliven my practice, my understanding. The following definitions came to me through the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda.

Aum or Om: The basis of all sound; universal symbol-word for God. The all-pervading sound emanating from Cosmic Vibration-the voice of all creation, or of God.

Christ Consciousness: Consciousness of Spirit as immanent in every unit of vibratory creation.

Cosmic Consciousness: Consciousness of Spirit transcending finite creation.

Satsanga: Fellowship with man by appreciation; fellowship with God by meditation.

Aum/Om Is Universal

Universal….though not always recognized due to cultural and/or religious concepts of separation or ideologies (such as “There is only one truth and it is mine.”)

Paramahansa Yogananda gives a thought-provoking definition in the glossary of his book Whispers from Eternity:

AUM OR OM:  The basis of all sounds; universal symbol-word for God. “Amin” is used by the Moslems, “Amen” by the Christians and “Aum” by the Hindus. See Cosmic Sound.

COSMIC SOUND:  Om or Aum, the all-pervading sound emanating from Cosmic Vibration – the voice of all creation, or of God…

Blessings of Love and Light. May you find Peace in the Oneness of All That Is. May your meditation practice open your mind and heart to the sound of the Divine Presence within and without.

AUM and Christ Consciousness

On page 48 of Metaphysical Meditations, Paramahansa Yogananda writes:

EXLANATION OF “AUM” AND “CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS”

In Autobiography of a Yogi Paramahansa Yogananda says: ” ‘The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said to you” (John 14:26). These Biblical words refer to the threefold, nature of God as Father, Son, Holy Ghost (Sat, Tat, Aum in the Hindu scriptures).

“God the Father is the Absolute, Unmanifested, existing beyond vibratory creation. God the Son is the Christ Consciousness existing within vibratory creation; this Christ Consciousness is the ‘only begotten’ or sole reflection of the Uncreated Infinite.

“The outward manifestation of the omnipresent Christ Consciousness, it’s ‘witness’ (Rev. 3:14), is Aum (Om), the Word or Holy Ghost: invisible divine power, the only doer, the sole causative and activating force that upholds all creation through vibration. Aum the blissful Comforter is heard in meditation and reveals to the devotee the ultimate Truth, bringing ‘all things to your remembrance.’ “

Namaste.
