Emotional Balance

Emotional balance has been unfolding in my life for 50 years.  One of the biggest hurdles has been letting go of the belief that my emotions define me; that I am what I am currently feeling.  I now define emotion as: e-motion = energy in motion.  When I am experiencing a specific emotion, I realize that it is energy moving through my entire being.  It is energy that has been given a name such as happiness, sorrow, anger, etc.  Remembering this helps me release judgement about the nature of that energy.  Energy is energy; it is neither good nor bad; it just is.

As practices for the body and mind (yoga, meditation, healthy eating, exercise, fresh air, loving friends, etc.) have become consistent in my life, my emotions have become more consistent as well.  For the most part, my emotions fit what I am experiencing in the moment.  When each of my parents died, I was deeply sad and grieved.  I was also profoundly grateful that I was with them in their transitions. I was proud to be their daughter. I was also grateful for everything they had given me over the years.  So many emotions flowed during those times and I felt them all. Intense and fulfilling all at once.

In releasing judgement, I view these experiences in terms of intensity.  Seldom is overwhelming happiness described as bad, yet it is every bit as intense as sorrow and can be just as exhausting.  My granddaughter’s birth was so intensely joyful that there were times I didn’t sleep very well.  There were times when I quietly cried for happy.  Intense.

On the other end of the spectrum, I choose not to take in news about things like child abuse because the depth of anger I feel on behalf of these innocents is almost frightening to me.  But is anger always “bad?”  Not in my opinion, because there are many people who have been inspired to acts of bravery because of the anger that arises within them.  Anger and frustration with things I had allowed or created in my life have given me the courage to make very difficult changes.  Intense.

Intensity is seldom comfortable, which is why these energies are judged as bad or unhealthy.  The key, is – guess what? – balance!  It makes more sense to realize that imbalance in the emotional body creates confusion and can be destructive than to set the goal of never feeling these things.  When I feel angry, can I allow myself to be in it in a way that leads me to action, forgiveness or compassion?  If so, I will quickly return to peace and tranquility.  My actions will be appropriate to the situation and to my desire and intention to live lovingly and compassionately.  It is when I avoid and stuff or hide my feelings that my behavior becomes inappropriate and possibly destructive.

Balance is the key. Here are a few reasonable goals:  Feel without being thrown against the wall by the intensity of emotions. Be willing to sit with the discomfort in order to remember that energy in motion does not define me; it is something you are experiencing in the moment.  It will diminish, shift, transform because that is the nature of energy.  Embrace the experience for what it is:  a human experience that does not change or define your True Self, a spiritual being. Be patient and remember that it takes time and maturity to come into this awareness in every aspect of your being: physical, mental, emotional.  You don’t have to change everything at once.  You don’t have to fight yourself and judge yourself.  You do not have to be perfect.  You can be in this moment, experience it, and be all that you are.  You can unfold into True Self as naturally as a healthy tree matures and produces perfect fruit.

One of my favorite responses to myself when I explode into emotional intensity and catch myself in the midst of it is:    Well, Catherine Ann, welcome to the human race!

Love and Light

No one told me I was Love and Light in Form when I was growing up.

But I Am!

This form, my body, cannot exist apart from the spark of the Divine, my Soul, within. I was taught, very simply, that God is Love. Interesting, don’t you think, that neither “God” nor “Love” can be adequately defined and understood? And yet, we desire both with a passion that drives us. Why? I believe it is because we passionately seek to find the truth of who we truly are.

Sadly, many of us are taught that can only be found outside ourselves, and this Truth, The Truth, can only be found within….because God, Love and Light, manifests in me, and you….because

We are Love and Light in Form

Today’s Intention

Each morning I take a few moments to write down an intention for the day. I record my daily intention in a small notebook. Flipping through it from time to time brings me to a place of gratitude and peace.

An intention opens the mind and heart; it sets the tone for my day.

This is my intention today:

I live from the Truth of Who I Am…a spiritual being currently having a human experience.

I love this one and set it often:

I live from the Peace of my Soul.

What is your intention today?

Today Is A Gift

Today is a gift. Please unwrap it gently and open your mind and heart to its many aspects and layers. May you experience this gift with grace, peace,  understanding, and joy. May you be a blessing to each person you encounter for you are sharing that moment with a brother or a sister.  May you  openly and lovingly receive the blessing each person brings to you.  And me these mutual blessings radiate out to our world.

Namaste.

Daily Habits for Peace

I am passing this on from Deepak Chopra’s website http://chopra.com

7 Days a Week: Daily Habits for Peace

The balance of peace in the world can seem overwhelming, as if huge forces outside your controller in charge. But you can take a different perspective by setting a goal for yourself of creating peace all around you. The worlds wisdom traditions teach that the source of violence, war, discontent, rebellion, and unrest lies inside each of us.  When you become a unit of peace and consciousness, exemplifying the quality known as Ahimsa (harmlessness) in Yoga, you have added a unique way to bring in the world to a state of peace.

Develop your pease consciousness by focusing on a different have it every day of the week.

Monday: Habit #1-Being Calm and Centered

Peace is the natural state of the mind at its deepest level. Non-peace begins in small ways, when you are worried, restless, distracted, uneasy, or dissatisfied. Today be mindful of those signals from your inner world. When you feel them, take a moment to return to your calm space. Either meditating or simply sitting in a quiet space with eyes closed and taking easy, deep breath’s, works very well. Today’s habit is learning how to act upon early signals that peach isn’t there inside.

Tuesday: Habit #2-Non-participation

To be a unit of peace consciousness, don’t participate in the opposite attitude, which magnifies the reasons to be unpeaceful. Today, avoid conversations that include gossip, blame, backbiting, and discussions of how terrible the world is. You don’t have to be a Pollyanna, acting as if everything is already perfect. Simply focus on not participating when you can feel that the situation is turning toward anger, resentment, envy, and hostility in any form.

Wednesday: Habit #3-Taking No Side

Peace consciousness wants peace to be equally shared by everyone. This isn’t possible if you take sides, judge against others, or indulge in us-versus-them thinking. Today, be aware of everyone’s right to have peace. When you find yourself reacting with a knee-jerk response against a certain person, group, faith, ethnicity, or belief system, remind your self that you can hold a different viewpoint while still wishing peace for all concerned.

Thursday: Habit #4-The Intention of Peace

Peace consciousness becomes more powerful as it deepens. One way to deepen your awareness is to put an intention out to the universe, which really means connecting with your higher self. Today, anytime you witness or confront a situation that needs a peaceful resolution, ask inside that the way to peace be opened for everyone. Sit quietly with this intention for a few moments, letting your heart go out to those not at peace.

Friday: Habit #5-Commune in Peace

When people of peace get together, they magnify their consciousness. Today, find a way to commune with someone else who wants peace. This can be through sitting with a child and absorbing his or her innocence, or discussing the topic of peace with the sympathetic person. You might consider joining a group that is working at any level of peace, such as preventing violence or helping troubled teens. Feel the warmth of sharing your peace with others.

Saturday: Habit #6-Selfless Service

Peace consciousness wants to be of service. It does little good to be at peace passively and isolation. Today, allow someone else to feel the peave you have found by being of service. Let yourself experience the kindness, goodwill, and compassion you can bring to a troubled situation. Your service can be as modest as visiting the elderly or as active as joining a community outreach project. Your aim is to give and receive at the level of peace that benefits both people at the same time.

Sunday: Habit #7-The Soul’s Peace

At the deepest level, there is infinite peach. Undisturbed by the play of opposites and the clash of darkness versus light. From the soul’s perspective, there is only pure Being. Today, take time to meditate on your true nature as unbounded love, compassion, reverence for life, and unity with the divine presence. See the light expanding from your heart in all directions.  Let simply being here be enough.

Soak up the beauty of Nature and realize that you are an indispensable part of the journey to enlightenment that lies ahead for everyone who steps onto the path. Just as there is only one state of pure Being, there is only one peace, which blesses every person equally.

Apparently We Wanted To Know

I love the enlightened viewpoint of my friend, my cosmic brother, who has given me permission to quote him. If you find his wording or ideas a bit confusing, feel free to google terms and visit his website. Gary is a gifted song writer/performer who has touched my Soul with his very existence.

It’s the  law of attraction. As a group, we apparently wanted to know what this is going to look and be like. I will stay responsible for what I see and how I think and feel about it, and hold you in that same vibration. Won’t it be great when the majority joins us in the self – responsibility of the level of conscious vibration we embody.

U.N. International Day of Peace

Let it begin with me. On 9/11 I invited the students in all of my yoga classes to join me in sending love, comfort, and peace to those directly involved in the attacks, as well as to all of the first responders, families, etc. I kept reminding myself and them that the greatest gift we could send in that moment was the truth of our hearts: Divine Love. In order to do that we had to bring our minds into the moment and breathe into our own love and peace…we were not going to find that outside of ourselves. That is no less true today.

Let it begin with me. Will you join me today as people around the world stop and meditate for peace? Today, September 21, the United Nations invites us. I am inviting you. Keep it simple. Here is an example (you can read & record this on your phone):

Sit comfortably and let your eyes slowly close. Place your hands in a position that brings you peace – palms up on your lap, softly over your heart, or in namaste or prayer position. Become aware of your breath and, as you gently expand it into your chest and abdomen, scan your body releasing surfaces tensions and making adjustments to allow for ease as you sit. Allow your breath to settle into its normal rhythm and bring your awareness to your heart. Soften the belly and feel the spaciousness around your heart. Explore the love and peace that is your true nature and rest in that for several more breaths. Visualize peace as a soft energy that begins to ripple outward from the heart center just as water does when a pebble is dropped into a still pond. Let peace flow outward filling your home, your neighborhood, your city, state, and country. Let peace flow outward in gentle waves to our world, joining the waves of peace emanating out from every person meditating in the world today. Let peace flow outward until our planet is bathed in peace. Continue until you feel complete.

Thank you. Aum shanti shanti shanti. Aum peace peace peace.
